Epona's Tale: by Hylian Girl
Levi looked out the small window. His face had a mixture of excitement
and sadness on it. His blue eyes seemed to be wandering of into the vast field
that stood before the small house. Levi was in a different world.
Suddenly
a sharp pain came to the back of his head. Levi quickly sat up and looked down.
An innocent face peered back at up Levi's. The face belonged to a baby, a grinning
baby.
Levi reached around his head and gently loosened the
grasp of the baby. He was tugging at his small ponytail, causing Levi to wince.
The baby tugged once more before Levi completely removed the baby's hand from
Levi's hair.
The baby began to laugh. Levi figured it must be fun for
a little boy to cause trouble.
"Now look here, son, daddy still wants
all his hair for a little while longer," Levi grinned. He pointed at his sandy-coloured
hair.
"What's going on?" A woman popped her head out from
behind a door.
"Ah, nothing. Link here is attempting to remove my
hair, again," Levi looked at his
son.
"Link, sweetheart, I've
told you lots of times to leave daddy's hair alone," The woman said sternly. Link
put his hands on top of his blonde mop of hair. He hopped down from his father's
lap and crawled over to his mother. She walked back into the room she was
in and put Link to bed. She came back and sat on the other side of the table where
Levi was sitting.
Levi was looking back out the window. He sighed, and
looked at his wife.
"Don't go, Levi," She said sadly.
"Naya,
I have to. Hyrule depends on it. I have to be a solder and help out our land,"
Levi said sternly.
"But what about your family, what about your
son? Doesn't he mean anything to you? You must stay home to protect your family.
The solders can manage fine without you," Naya's eyes began to well up with
tears.
"Love, I have to protect everyone else at the same time. I need
to go," Levi said. He took Naya's hand. Naya looked a little more convinced.
"Promise me you'll come back?" Naya looked deeply into Levi's eyes.
"I
promise," Levi gave his wife a kiss on the cheek. Naya gave a
sad smile and looked at her husband. He was wearing a green uniform. Around his
left arm was a red band with the Triforce on it. Naya couldn't believe that her
husband was going to war. The war was stupid. So what if Kain does not believe
in the Triforce? Kain is a completely different country, and they don't have
to believe anything. Why are people fighting?
Naya looked out the window
at the field. She missed things the way they used to be.
Levi looked
at his wife. "Epona should be here soon, love, you better get to the market before
it becomes too busy."
"You're right. I'll get going, say hi to Epona
for me, and don't forget to pay her this time," Naya laughed.
"She
refused the money, I didn't forget!" Levi argued. Naya just laughed again and
walked out the door. Levi began to gaze out the window again. He was back in
his world of thoughts, ideas, and dreams. He was lost in peace.
A rough
rap on the door came and brought Levi back to reality. He stood up and walked
over to the door. He opened it, and saw a tall teen-aged girl. Epona had arrived.
"Hello,
Levi! How's little Link?" Epona asked cheerfully.
"Oh,
troublesome as always," Levi said took a light hold on his hair and cleared
the way for Epona to walk through.
"Levi, you don't mind an extra
visitor, do you?" Epona put her hands behind her back. She seemed to be holding
something.
"No, not at all, who?" Levi asked curiously.
"Chane,
I'm sure you haven't met him though. He's my little brother. Mom had
to go out to get a few supplies before the war gets too bad, so she wanted me
to bring him," Epona said. She took her hands out from behind her back, and a little
boy followed. Epona knelt down next to Chane. "Chane, this is Levi, the nice
man I was telling you about. We're going to go inside and take care of Link,
Levi's little boy," Epona stood back up, smiled and walked in with Chane's hand
in her hand.
Levi followed behind and went and got Link out of his
bed. Link had a huge grin on his face when he saw Epona.
"Epa! Epa!"
Link called out happily. He reached his arms out to Epona.
"Hello,
Link, I'm happy to see you too," Epona took Link in her arms and pointed to
Chane, sitting shyly next to his big sister. "Link, this is my brother, Chane,
you can play with him." Epona sat Link on the floor and placed Chain next to him.
"I
hope they'll get along, well. How old is Chane, anyway?" Levi
said. He was watching the two boys closely incase a brawl broke out between them.
"Chane
just turned two a week ago. I know there is a two year difference
between Link and Chane, but I'm sure they could become great friends."
Epona smiled. She always had a carefree sprit, and it seemed like, no matter ho
bad the situation was, she could always bring the good out in the bad. Levi smiled.
"Just
watch Chane's hair, Link has taken a liking to pulling everyone's
hair, especially people with long hair. You better watch those braids
of yours, Epona, he could come up behind you and just grab them when you least
expect it," Levi warned.
"I'll keep a keen eye open, sir!" Epona joked.
Epona had always loved her hair, and Chane's. Epona had light brown hair.
She had long bangs, which has been neglected to cut, and were pushed to either
side of her face. Two long strands of uncatched hair ran down from behind her long
ears. Coming from the bottom of her head were two long, neat braids, which
were tied at the end with a piece of black leather.
Chane had thick
black hair. It had strands of light brown colour scattered about his head. His
hair stuck up in every place imaginable, and it seemed useless to try and
comb
it, it was too wild.
Epona looked back up at Levi. "I see you're
going to the war. When are you leaving?"
"I have to leave tonight.
I'll miss Naya and Link, and you. There's never a dull moment with you, Epona!"
Levi smiled.
"Thanks, I'll miss you too. I hope you come back alive,
not as a ghost. But if you do come as a ghost, be a friendly one," Epona said
half-jokingly.
"Gee, I'll keep that in mind…" Levi laughed a bit.
"By the way, how is your father doing?" Epona gazed sadly down at the pine floor.
"He's
getting better, I know it. He'll live and he'll lead a normal
life," Epona was sure of her words. But Levi knew this was not true.
Epona
and Chane's father was suffering from a horrible, unidentified, incurable
disease. It had been haunting almost everyone in Epona's family, but some
members were lucky enough to not receive the deadly gift. Levi felt a little
guilty about reminding Epona about the tragedy. He decided to change the subject
and leave.
"Well, uh, I better get goin', I have some equipment to
pick up, hopefully I will be back soon, see ya later, kids!" With that, Levi stood
up straight and walked out the
door.
Hours passed, and Levi
and his wife eventually returned home. Levi said goodbye to everyone he knew,
and left with a heavy heart. He was going to miss everyone. Most of all, Link.
What if he never returned? Would his own family ever see him again? Only fate
would guide him, he told himself, only fate would guide him.
A few
weeks later, Epona had come once again to tend to Link while Naya cleaned, shopped,
sewed, and any other thing that a housewife would do. As Epona walked into
the doorway, she noticed a scroll near the door. She bent over, picked up the
scroll, and walked into the door.
"Hello Naya, I have something for
you!" Epona called. Naya walked over to Epona. "I found this parchment near the
door, I thought you might 'ave not noticed it." Epona handed the paper to Naya.
Naya opened it and began reading. Disbelief came into Naya's dark eyes. She
handed to parchment to Epona and turned away from her.
"Come sit down
in the kitchen," Naya commanded softly. Epona followed Naya into the small room.
Epona sat down at the table while Naya looked out the window. "Could you read
this out loud to me?" Epona nodded and opened the paper.
"To the
family and friends of Levi Kingmon,
"It is my duty as the leader of
the Hyrulian Force to inform every family about the men of their family that have
gone to war...

"To the family and friends of Levi Kingmon,
"It
is my duty as the leader of the Hyrulian Force to inform every family
about the men of their family that have gone to war. In this case, I need
to tell you about Levi.
"Levi was on his night shift of patrolling.
When morning came, Levi was nowhere to be found. We did find Stalafos and Lisafos
footprints in the soil, but the rain that night had washed most of them away,
making it impossible for us to find him again. We have also taken Levi for dead.
We are deeply sorry for your loss. There will be a ceremony for Levi…" Epona
began to trail off. She felt that she did not need to go any further. Naya's
eyes were welled up with tears. She turned around and walked into a room and slammed
the door shut. As if on cue, Link began to cry from a different room. The
noise form the door startled and awakened him. Epona ran into the room Link was
in and picked him up from his cradle. Epona began to rock him slowly, and she
spoke softly.
"Hush, Link. Everything will be all right. Shhh." Epona
leaned against the wall and fell asleep with Link in her arms.
When
Epona awoke, she laid Link back in the cradle and stood up. She felt as if she
had slept for hours. She searched for Naya, but
did not find her. She
must have gone out, Epona told herself.
Epona sat at the kitchen table.
She couldn't believe what happened. Levi was gone. Link would never remember
his father, and he was such a nice man. Epona heaved a great sigh and slouched
down onto the tabletop.
A few minutes later a rough knock on the door
was heard. Epona jumped up and answered it.
A tall man, dressed
in black armor stood there. He looked as if he was a Guredo; his skin was tanned
for the beating sun.
"Can I help you?" Epona asked uneasily. She felt
uncomfortable at the sight of the black armor. The man placed an evil grin
on his face.
"Of course you can help me. Join me. You have amazing power
you do not even know about. If you join my band, all of Hyrule, no, the world
will be ours!" The man began to laugh evilly.
"What… are you talking
about?" Epona demanded to know.
"Your immense power! You do not
even realize you have so awesome power! Join me, and evil shall rain! The world
will be ours!"
"Even if I do have some power, I will never join evil's
side. I stand for truth. Go find some other person to destroy the world,"
Epona waved him off, as if it was all some
big gag.
"You think
I'm lying? I am not! If you will not join me, you shall join no other. You shall
never use your power, a horse you shall be!" With that, the man raised his right
hand in the air. A large, black ball formed in his palm. Epona stepped back,
realizing that this was no joke. Her heart pounded, not knowing what he was
about to do.
"I am the great Ganondorf! No one shall stand in my way!"
He threw the ball straight for Epona. Epona tried her best to dodge the black
sphere, but it expanded all around her. Epona notice how the air around her was
getting thin, and began to get thinner with each passing second. Epona threw
herself against to rounded walls. She wanted to get out. She wanted to live. Her
body began to slow down. There was no air left, and she began to choke. Epona
collapsed to her knees, and then she toppled over into a lifeless heap. Epona
had died.
Ganon began to laugh. "Live again, you will, but not as yourself,
a different being. Too bad, it was a waste of power." Ganon snapped his
fingers, and the ball disappeared. He left the house, but then turned around
and looked evil at the homestead. He formed a fireball in his hand and innocently
tossed it at the Kingmon's home.
"Opps, didn't mean to do that,"
Ganon kidded. He walked back into the vast field from where he came from. The house
was burning with a baby inside.
