The Creation
By: Idiot

“Imagine a Hyrule free of cities, free of castles, and free of temples. This Hyrule is even before the time of the Lon Lon Ranch. There is no trail that leads from one place to another, for Hyrule field has not been traveled, its grasses yet untrodden. The three goddesses that the Triforce represents have just finished their work in creating the world, and now decide how to best populate it.

“The goddess of power, Din, confident in her ability, was first to create a sentient creature upon the earth. The rock, firm where it stood, was the strongest thing in existence. She would make something, someone, who could destroy the rock with its bare hands. This creature would be stronger than any other, though it would have a simpler mind. It would resemble the rock that it crushed every day, immovable unless it chose to move. Din, out of the rock and lava, chose to create the species we now know as the Goron.

“Farore, goddess of courage, chose the next creature. It would be daring enough to enter into the belly of a great fish, and skilled enough to return unharmed. Having an aura of confidence, it would, without thinking, dive into the deepest, darkest depths of the seas, knowing creatures that you and I have never dreamed of seeing. It would traverse those depths with a grace that would leave one in awe, seeing as most can only waddle around in the water, not moving an inch in the time that they can go a mile. Farore created the men of the sea, the Zoras.

“Nayru, possessing greater wisdom then the other two, created a species that was unknown for a long time. They kept to themselves in the dark forest, eternally happy, eternally young. These were truly the creations of a wise being, for, being young, they had great innocence, but being eternally that way, had great knowledge and experience. Innocence, or the absence of corruption, is a key ingredient in true wisdom. The knowledge and experience they gained, together with that innocence of youth, made them wiser than any other species. Of course, being the eternal children that they are, they would be prone to mischief, and Nayru knew that, so she formed a symbiotic species that would live with the children. The innocence of one and the caution and wariness of the other would cause them to be great in the eyes of anyone who could look past the fact that they were mere children. Yes, Nayru created both the Kokiri and the faeries.

“The work of the goddesses was over, having created intelligent beings to inhabit the earth. Each would live in a world apart from the other, living according to the virtues of power, courage, or wisdom that their respective creators had given them. And thus was the creation of three of the greatest species of this world.”

The students of the Hylian classroom sat in awe, the images of the history of their kindred species being engraved in their minds. Something, though, didn’t quite sit right with one of the students.

“Excuse me, professor, but there aren’t three great species. There are at least four. Where did our race, the Hylian race, come from?”

“Well, have you ever noticed that in the images of the triforce there is always a whole in the middle, just as big of any of its portions? That is what is called the hidden, or missing triforce, or the triforce of balance. That space does not represent a golden goddess as do the three parts of the triforce, but a law that must be obeyed. A balance must exist between power, courage, and wisdom. In each of their spheres, the three species were dominated by their virtue, so a balance had to be created. This species, the Hylian, is the only one equally influenced by all three virtues. It depends equally on all three, too. From power, his strength, from courage, his willingness to live, and from wisdom, his ability to invent everything necessary to travel from sphere to sphere, whether it be the mountains, the forests, or the seas. Having been created not of the goddesses, but of the need to maintain balance, he is dependant on the life force of other things, and is given, in representation of the three sides of the Triforce, three measures of life, which we call ‘heart containers.’ More measures of life can be found in quests to achieve greater balance between the three other species, making a Hylian stronger, more courageous, and wiser. Plants, animals, and other living things also have measures of life given to them, and they can help heal the wounded Hylian. Now, if there are no more questions, class dismissed.”
